Short-Interval, Severe Wildfires Alter Saproxylic Beetle Diversity in Andean Araucaria Forests in Northwest Chilean Patagonia

چکیده
The occurrence of short-interval, severe wildfires are increasing drastically at a global scale, and appear as novel phenomenon in areas where fire historically returns large time lapses. In forest ecosystems, these events induce drastic changes population dynamics, which could dramatically impact species diversity. Here, we studied the effect on diversity recent (SISF), occurred rapid succession summers 2002 2015 Chilean Northern Patagonian Araucaria–Nothofagus forests. We analyzed deadwood-dependent (i.e., saproxylic) fire-sensitive beetles biological indicators across four conditions: 2002-burned areas, 2015-burned SISF burned again 2015), unburned areas. Saproxylic were collected using window traps 2017 to 2019 summer seasons. To investigate mechanisms underpinning fire-related disturbance assemblage, evaluated effects post-fire habitat quality (e.g., dead wood decomposition) quantity volume tree density) abundances richness entire assemblage also multiple trophic groups. Compared with condition, reduced richness, evenness, Shannon’s altered composition saproxylic beetle assemblages. between-condition variation was accounted for by replacement (turnover) between but both extinction (nestedness) Dead decomposition density variables strongest abundance most These results suggest that SISF, through degraded (dead (arboreal density), have detrimental impacts dynamics Therefore, loss is central mechanism biodiversity ecosystems.

Edge Influence on Diversity of Orchids in Andean Cloud Forests
Cloud forests harbor high levels of orchid diversity. However, due to the high fragmentation of these forests in the Andes, combined with the pressure for new agricultural land, orchid diversity is highly threatened. Despite this worrying scenario, few studies have assessed the effects of habitat loss specifically on orchid assemblages in the Andes. The aim of this study was to analyze the edge...
متن کاملSuccession of Ground-Dwelling Beetle Assemblages After Fire in Three Habitat Types in the Andean Forest of NW Patagonia, Argentina
Wildfires are one of the major disturbances in the dynamics of forests and shrublands. However, little is known about their effects on insect communities that contribute to faunal biodiversity and play key roles in the ecosystem's dynamics. An intense and widespread fire occurred in 1999 in the Nahuel Huapi National Park in the Andean forest in northern Patagonia, Argentina. This fire affected ...
متن کاملWildfires Dynamics in Siberian Larch Forests
Wildfire number and burned area temporal dynamics within all of Siberia and along a south-north transect in central Siberia (45 ̋–73 ̋ N) were studied based on NOAA/AVHRR (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/ Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) and Terra/MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data and field measurements for the period 1996–2015. In addition, fire ...
متن کاملThe canopy beetle faunas of Gondwanan element trees in Chilean temperate rain forests
Methods Canopy fogging was used to sample beetles from 29 trees. The samples were statistically described using Schao and the Simpson diversity index D. Cluster analyses and multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) were performed. The taxonomic and guild structures of the Chilean coleopteran fauna were compared quantitatively with those found in other parts of the world using homogeneity chi-square and ...
متن کاملPatterns of saproxylic beetle succession in loblolly pine
1 Patterns of insect succession in dead wood remain unclear, particularly beyond the first several years of decay. In the present study, saproxylic beetles were sampled from loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) logs aged between 1 month and 9 years old using both emergence traps attached to logs in the field and rearing bags in the laboratory. 2 Species richness peaked within the first year as a resu...
